Social Media, Hepatitis C, and the Gastroenterologist

April 30, 2010

Social health.  Viral hepatitis.  Gastroenterologists.  Together, in harmony, on one podium.

What I’m referring to is Social Media, HCV and the Gastroenterologist, a satellite symposium taking place at the American Gastroenterological Association’s Digestive Disease Week on Sunday, May 2nd at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans.  Expect high impact presentations from three of the country’s leading experts on hepatitis C with matching discussion (from yours truly) on how social media can be leveraged to improve education among providers and at-risk populations.

I suspect that this is the first time serious consideration of social health has been given prime time attention at a national meeting. I hope this is part of a broader trend that recognizes new media as prime real estate in influencing health behaviors and disease understanding.

Medical professionals are playing catch up when it comes to 21st century health communication and communicable diseases. This forum and this discussion is a good place to start.

PIKlogo2003Hats off to Projects in Knowledge, purveyor of high quality medical education, for making this happen.  And thanks to Vertex Pharmaceuticals for recognizing the role of social media in hepatitis C awareness and serving as a sponsor.

If you will be at DDW there is still time to register. The program will also be available by live video webcast.

As Chair of the Symposium, we are delighted to have you add this exciting new dimension to our program.
I am confident that our attendees will benefit from this unique opportunity to learn about the role social media can play for health care professionals even as we also try to provide a high level update on new developments in hepatitis C.

It's promising to see medical outreach to the online social networks where ears and eyes are readily available, and more likely to respond. Will there be any transcripts/recordings of the conference available to the public?
