Chasing Fuzzy Medical Journalism

April 13, 2009 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

What’s going on over at ABC’s Good Morning America? In just over a week GMA has received three miserable reviews from the health care journalism watchdogs at Health News Review. The site polices health journalism and reports on reliability and accuracy. GMA’s stories on laser cures for nail fungus, HPV DNA testing as a replacement for the PAP smear, and coronary calcium testing received reviews ranging from zero to two our of five stars. You can read the dirty details of this and other fuzzy medical journalism on the Health News Review site.

This is interesting as I’ve always held the network morning shows as to a high standard for coverage of timely health issues.  I guess I’ll have to look more closely.

I learned about Health News Review after sitting on a panel with former Washington Post reporter and HNR reviewer Craig Stolz during a recent AMA conference. Check it out, if you dare. It’s run by Gary Schwitzer, Professor of Journalism at the University of Minnesota. He pens a Schwitzer Health News Blog.  With regard to the GMA reports, Schwitzer suggested that “instead of starting your day with this kind of health news, you’d be better off going for a walk.”  Ouch.
