Leaders and Their Smartphones

February 23, 2012 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minute

Leaders and their smartphonesRecently I realized that really important people aren’t fixated on their smartphones.

I spent time recently with some very influential people.  Higher ups, leaders, mucky mucks.  I never saw them look at their smartphones.  Next time you’re around a real leader, take note.  You would never know that they even own a phone.  I suspect they have better things to do.

Those lower on the food chain, however, seem increasingly obsessed with the trivia and immediacy of their digital correspondence.

I wonder what the leaders know?

  • Perhaps they understand the relative importance of IRL over virtual interaction.
  • Maybe they’re too busy making things to talk about making things.
  • They know that email needs to be checked far less frequently than most of us think.
  • They understand that we go further when we value people over platforms.

I might conclude that if you want to get ahead, stop looking down.
