Write Like No One is Watching

August 6, 2016 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

eye of spy, web cam behind a paper holeThis blog was easier when no one was watching.

Let me explain.

I started this whole thing for myself. To put my thoughts together. Then I realized that there’s value to sharing ideas before they’re fully baked. While you may enjoy this, it’s really for me. You’re a spectator.

But I started running into problems when I learned who was watching. I got pulled into writing for an audience which I suspect is a natural sequence.

Now I think, ‘Is this worthy of so-and-so who reads?’ ‘Mr. Man from The Atlantic won’t like me when I say such-and-such.’

So then I hold back because I think what I think may not pass muster. Writing here is like singing in the shower. I’m strangely better when I think no one’s watching. Or reading.

But what got me this far was what I did to shape what was in my head. The irony is that when I stick to that more people come around.

A couple of other things:

I write less for traffic and more for both of us. I believe the best search optimization strategy is good stuff.

More than more readers I want the right readers. When I build ideas and concepts in public the right people find me. And when the right people find me things happen. That’s the real benefit of public thinking.

If you want my stuff in your inbox, please subscribe in the little box over on the right.
