Role Models and Digital Professionalism

March 2, 2013 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

When you watch and listen to thousands of doctors talking, creating, curating and commenting, you’ll find that there those who maintain their presence with remarkable balance and equanimity.  They talk to the point of being human but never to the point of being inhumane.  They’re open enough that they’re different.  They share to a degree that doesn’t represent ... Death of the Digital Physician

May 24, 2012 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

I use the term digital physician to describe doctors in the context of changing patterns of work and thought.  We're doing more with digital tools.  The tools are redefining us. Right now we worry about all the bad things that come from our digital transition.   Careers will be built confirming the tired bias that the internet is a place where good doctors go to ... Will Things Really Get Worse for Doctors Online?

April 5, 2012 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

The more I read the more warnings I hear about doctors online.  It seems that as more doctors interact online, the more problems we can expect to encounter.  According to authorities, things are about to get worse for all of us.  Imagine the clinical chaos we can expect come 2050. Or maybe not. The problem with this pessimistic view is what Matt Ridley has ... Continue Reading about Will Things Really Get Worse for Doctors Online?

March 22, 2012 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: 2 minutes

A research letter published yesterday in JAMA reports patterns of online physician behavior. A recall survey of 68 state board executives was taken on disciplinary matters related to online misconduct.  Of the 48 respondents, 44 reported having taken at least one disciplinary action in eight categories covered by the survey. Transgressions include inappropriate online ... Continue Reading about Is Online Physician Behavior Really That Risky?

Defining Social Standards for Doctors

February 9, 2012 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

There's lots of discussion about how doctors should carry themselves online. What are the social standards that guide doctors online? I think it's simpler than we make it out to be. Consider that we all live and work in communities.  We're are shaped by those around us.  None of us do what we do alone.  And what I do and how I behave affects the way my community ... Unprofessional Physician Behavior on Twitter

May 23, 2011 By Bryan Vartabedian · Reading Time: < 1 minutes

I woke up this morning to a couple of DMs from physicians alerting me to the Twitter thread seen below (tweets read bottom to top).  Is it unprofessional?  Decide for yourself. Whether you change details or not, the use of the social space at the comical expense of those we’re called to treat is irresponsible.  While the detailed depiction of the patient's problem ...
